Israeli Influence on British Politics has called for a petition. Recently, a popular petition has called for an investigation into Israeli influence in the British Parliament. The number of signatures on this petition has reached a certain number. Therefore, the Parliament will examine the issue of Israeli influence in British politics during an open session.

British foreign policy towards the crises in the Middle East has suffered a kind of analytical paralysis. British interests are being sacrificed for the aggressive approaches of another state. However, many ministers in the UK are using funds to support the Israel Lobby. It is despite Israel being harmful to the country.

Israeli Influence on British Politics: Pro-Israel Lobbying Activity

There is a concern about Israeli state-linked and pro-Israel lobbying activity in UK politics. Determining the extent and effect of any such influence campaigns is important.

Moreover, the horrific devastation in Gaza, the continued persecution of Palestinians in the West Bank, together with the political reaction of the UK government to this issue, highlight the urgency of studying the impact that Zionist pressure groups and organizations can have on government policies and decision-making processes.

Israel Lobby: A Phrase to Support Israel

The phrase “Israel lobby” has 26 mentions in two years. It tends to quote others in a disparaging way or to suggest that such a lobby does not exist. For example, one Guardian article refers to “the trope of the ‘Israel lobby’”. The Daily Mail reported in May 2024 on hecklers at a speech by then foreign secretary David Lammy, “accusing the MP of having taken ‘shady money’ from the ‘pro-Israel lobby’ on the grounds that he once lawfully accepted £30,000 from a Zionist lobbyist named Trevor Chinn.”

The Israel lobby in Britain is extensive. Declassified has revealed that pro-Israel individuals and groups funded a quarter of MPs, including half of Keir Starmer’s Cabinet. In fact, British businessman Trevor Chinn has funded Keir Starmer and several senior Labour ministers. It received the Israeli medal of honour for its “dedication” to and “love” for Israel.

Israeli Influence on British Politics: A Public Inquiry

The British parliament’s decision to debate Israeli influence on UK politics comes after a petition expressed concern over Israeli lobbies’ influence in the UK. The UK’s parliament will debate the need for an inquiry into Israeli influence on British politics.

A member of the public, Andy Kalil, started the petition in January. The petition was initiated on January 28, 2015, “on the issue of Israeli state-linked and pro-Israeli lobbying within British politics. We believe that it is necessary to find out the extent of any influence operations that might be taking place”. The petition has gained 118,306 signatures so far. Petitions that gain more than 100,000 signatures are automatically put forward for parliamentary debate. The country’s Labour government has said it does not support the petition.

Zionist Influence: Petition Necessary

Kalil told The New Arab publication in March: “I launched the petition after seeing a parliamentary petition about Russian influence in UK politics. Many of the comments underneath were asking, ‘What about Zionist influence?’ So, I thought I’d write the petition. I was a bit surprised that no one had gotten there before me.” The response has been remarkable and very much a collective effort. I’m extremely grateful to everyone who’s signed or shared it,” he said.

Kalil said he had attempted two previous petitions. One called for aid flotillas to be dispatched to Gaza, which was unsuccessful. The other calling on the British government to recognise Israel’s war on Gaza as a genocide was blocked.

UK Government Not Supporting a Public Inquiry

Israeli influence on British politics requires more attention. James Frith, a government minister and the parliamentary under-secretary of state for digital government, said that “the government does not support a public inquiry solely on pro-Israeli influence”.

He added, “The UK and Israel have a deep and enduring relationship. Seventy-six years ago, we were rightly proud to recognise the state of Israel.” He further said: “We should condemn the readiness, ease, and tendency to hold 300,000 British Jews collectively accountable for the actions of the Israeli government.”

Supporting the Two-state Solution for Palestine

According to the watchdog Track Israel Lobby UK and British media organisation Declassified UK, some of the Israeli lobbies, most of which advocate for a two-state solution for Palestine, include:

Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI) dedicates itself to strengthening ties between the former ruling Conservative Party and the State of Israel. Labour Friends of Israel (LFI), which focuses on strengthening ties between the ruling Labour Party and Israel. Liberal Democrats Friends of Israel, which is an affiliated grassroots organisation within the UK Liberal Democrat Party.

Israel Supporters in the UK: Leaders Funding the Israel Lobby

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs directly funds and organises trips to Israel and programmes for foreign politicians, including UK MPs. It is a part of Israel’s public diplomacy efforts. Elnet UK operates across Europe. It aims to strengthen relations between European countries and Israel through educational programmes, parliamentary delegations, and policy engagement.

The former Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Australian businessman Albert Dadon co-founded Australia-Israel Cultural Exchange (AICE). While primarily focused on Australia, it has expanded to include UK politicians in its programmes.

Yachad, which means “together” in Hebrew, is a UK-based charity that says it is “pro-Israel” and “pro-peace”.

Israeli Influence on British Politics: Individuals Funding the Israel Lobby

Besides Labour leaders, pro-Israel lobby groups and individuals have also supported other British politicians financially in their campaigns. They also funded trips to Israel. In 2021, UK media reported that the Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI) party funded then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s visit to Israel in November 2004.

Johnson did not declare this trip until 2008, the reports added. According to a May 2021 Declassified UK report, Israel lobby groups funded 23 members of Johnson’s cabinet to visit Israel or Washington, DC, while members of parliament. Funds totalled at least 14,000 pounds ($18,489).

Lobbies Ousting Politicians from Parties: Israeli Fate

Besides funding and supporting British politicians, the lobbies have also played a role in ousting politicians from their parties or the government if they made statements against Israel. In 2009, an investigative documentary called “Dispatches: Inside Britain’s Israel Lobby” found that Lord Kalm, a CFI member and significant donor to the Conservatives, had threatened to remove British politician William Hague’s funding after he said that Israel had used “disproportionate” force during its war in Lebanon in 2006.

In 2020, the Labour Party suspended its ex-leader, Jeremy Corbyn. The decision followed a report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on failures in the way the party responded to claims of anti-Semitism in its membership.

Ministers Supporting Palestine: Justice and Humanity

Prinsley breached the declaration of interests rules “inadvertently” over a Labour Friends of Israel-funded trip to Israel in 2025. He called the petition a “regurgitation of antisemitic tropes”.  However, two Labour MPs – Kim Johnson and Tahir Ali – did speak in favour of an inquiry.

Israeli influence on British politics raises questions about humanity. Ayoub Khan is an independent MP for Birmingham Perry Barr. He said for millions up and down this country, the government’s approach towards Israel has defied the most basic logic of justice and humanity.
