The UK’s Military Aid to Ukraine to Continue Despite Trump’s Stance

Since the start of Ukraine’s crisis, the UK has offered or extended sanctuary to over 300,000 Ukrainians. UK officails claim that their support will continue to reach Ukrainians who need it most. The Defence Secretary visited Kyiv to announce a new £225m package of military support and meet with his counterpart, Rustem Umerov, to set out the five priority areas for UK defence support in 2025. This underlined the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine as long as it takes, signalling that The UK’s military aid to Ukraine will continue.

In an interview with Fox News, the Republican said the US should get a slice of Ukraine’s vast natural resources as compensation for the hundreds of billions it has spent on helping Kyiv resist Russia’s full-scale invasion. Kyiv fears that any settlement that does not include hard military commitments, such as NATO membership or the deployment of peacekeeping troops, will only allow the Kremlin time to regroup and rearm for a new attack. It seems that Trump wants to end the Ukraine war at any cost.

the UK has continued to step up support and international leadership in Ukraine. It includes a commitment to provide £3bn of military support to Ukraine annually for as long as it takes.  In July, the UK and Ukraine signed the Defence Industrial Support Treat. It expands cooperation and enables military equipment procurement through £3.5 billion in UK Export Finance-guaranteed loans. The Defence Secretary has also set out the five priority areas for UK defence support in 2025. It underlines the government’s commitment to support Ukraine for as long as it takes.

Starmer’s comments come weeks after the UK and Ukraine signed a historic 100-year partnership agreement in Kyiv. The wide-ranging deal encompasses cooperation in military, energy, scientific, cultural, economic, and other sectors. The UK and other European countries have pledged to play a more significant role in Ukraine’s defence against Russia amid the transition in the US government. Trump has limited US 72 billion dollar foreign aid to Ukraine and other countries since entering Oval office. It is unclear what the future holds for ongoing weapons shipments from Washington to Kyiv. Starmer has promised that the UK will play its “full part” in peacekeeping efforts in Ukraine. It may have included deploying British troops to monitor a ceasefire. The UK’s military aid to Ukraine will continue.

The US is the largest provider of military assistance to Ukraine.

After the 2024 US election, the Biden administration made clear its intention to surge as much military support to Ukraine as possible before the end of President Biden’s term in office in January 2025. As of 9 January 2025, the US’s total level of military assistance since the start of the Biden administration stands at $66.5 billion. $65.9 billion of that funding has been provided since February 2022.

The UK is one of the leading donors to Ukraine, alongside the US and Germany. The UK has pledged £12.8 billion in support to Ukraine since February 2022. £7.8 billion is for military assistance. This includes £3 billion for military aid in 2024/25. The UK is providing both lethal and non-lethal weaponry as the UK’s military aid to Ukraine. It includes tanks, air defence systems, and long-range precision strike missiles. While the UK has committed to training Ukrainian fast jet pilots, it will not provide combat fighter aircraft.

Starmer to Donald Trump: Western allies must “stand together” on Ukraine.

Starmer spoke to the United States presiden about different issues, including Ukraine. This is the second call since Trump’s thumping November US election win. PM Keir Starmer “reiterated the need for allies to stand together with Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression and to ensure Ukraine is in the strongest possible position,” per a British readout of the call.

Ukraine has not been a partisan issue in UK politics. Labour has followed the Conservatives in government by offering full support to Ukraine, including British military aid. The UK is now providing £3 billion a year in support and taking a relaxed view on whether the Storm Shadow missile supplied by the UK government can be used against targets in Russia (which it now has been).

What people think about the UK’s military aid to Ukraine

A new Ipsos poll reveals that the British public remains deeply concerned about the ongoing war in Ukraine. At least 7 in 10 or more expressed anxieties about its impact on Ukrainian civilians (77%), the UK economy (73%), and UK national security (71%). Almost half (46%) also express concern about the war’s impact on themselves.  The level of concern has been broadly the same since last August. Although not quite as high as it was in 2022.

The recent US election has reassured few Britons about the Ukraine war. Half of Britons (52%) say they feel more concerned about the situation in Ukraine following Donald Trump’s election as US President. Only 21% feel more reassured. This suggests a degree of public apprehension about the potential implications of the change in US leadership for the ongoing conflict.

“American support for Ukraine has a price tag,” Trump said

The Ukraine price of US President Donald Trump is $500B worth of mineral riches. Trump’s national security adviser Mike Waltz “talking through the details of how to end this war and that will mean getting both sides to the table”. In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Waltz said the Russian economy was not doing well and that Trump “is prepared to tax, to tariff, to sanction” Moscow to get Putin to the negotiating table. Waltz also underscored that the Trump administration is looking to use this week’s engagements to begin talks on clawing back some of the United States’ assistance to Ukraine. He said European allies would need to take a more significant role in supporting Ukraine.

Trump commented in an interview recently. He discussed the three-year-old conflict that has followed Russia’s full-scale invasion. Kyiv, meanwhile, has suggested it is open to an agreement that would see Washington compensated for continued military and financial aid. On the other hand, European and the UK’s military aid to Ukraine will continue, convergent transatlantic relations.
